Awesome August: The Arrival

We arrived at the airport.  I wanted to be in a good spot to see him coming.  There was airport construction going on so he would descend the escalator far back and walk down a corridor before coming out into the open area.  The arrival times were posted in the same area.  I think I checked them about every 2 or 3 minutes.  He was arriving from DFW on flight 1925 at 8:45 pm.

We tried to keep positioning ourselves closer and
closer to where he would come out.  There were two other families there welcoming home their missionaries as well.  One of the families was that of Elder Boyce Weber from Justin's mission.  The other was a missionary that had served in Europe.  Their sign said "Welcome home Elder Hairball."  I am pretty sure that was a joke and not his real name!  I could feel the excitement and the energy from all around.  There were signs and balloons.  There were excited parents and siblings.  There were eyes darting here and there saying, "Is that him?  Is that him?"  I felt the same way!

The plane landed and the wait began.  There were numerous people in suits coming...but none of them was my son.  I was standing but not still.  Moving back and forth, back and forth.  Looking desperately.  I couldn't wait to get my hands on that boy of mine.

And then I saw him.  And he saw this. People, his people, behind a sign.  And he stopped.  He didn't know what to do.  And I began jumping.  Up and down, up and down.  Jumping and squealing.

I couldn't keep my feet on the floor.  Here he was.  Back safe and sound.  Back to me.

He had done it.  We had done it.  He was home.

The cheering and the hugs began.  Elder Moore was home!

It was wonderful to have him in my arms again.  I loved seeing the brothers together....after almost 4 years.  He was surprised at how his little sister was now all grown up.

Justin's other brothers were there too...Adam Lee and Daniel Lym.  Now if I could only see them all play basketball together again my life would be complete!

I got just what I wanted...all my kids together...and Elder Moore got what he wanted...well, except for the masseuse!  We gatherered the luggage and headed off to dinner at Denny's.  It was late so we picked a restaurant we knew would be open.

At Denny's Elder Moore was having a hard time deciding what to order.  He hadn't spoken English for a long time and he hadn't eaten American food for a long time.  It was hard for him to make typical decisions.  The menu was too big.  He finally decided on a Chicken Caesar Salad but the server came back to say they were out of some of the ingredients and he would need to choose something different.  He then chose a brownie ice cream dessert.

It was so wonderful to have him back in the same place as me, but all the time I kept thinking, he would rather be back in Nicaragua.  That was home to him now.  That was where he was comfortable.  It was there that he understood the language and the people.  I know this period of adjustment is necessary...but it still makes it hard for the mama to watch.

Awesome August: The Anticipation

August was the month of all months.  The only way I survived it was by only thinking about what was happening and needed to be done that day.  Let's start from the very beginning, it's a very good place to start!

The month of August actually started on July 27th.  Brooklyn and I were headed up to Salt Lake for about ten days.  Elder Justin Moore was returning home from his two year LDS mission in Nicaragua.  We were going up early because Brooklyn and Brandon gave me two tickets to see Neil Diamond on July 28th at Rio Tinto Stadium.  They had given me these tickets for Valentine's so my excitement had been building for months!
The week previous my car had been in the shop.  When I picked it up on Thursday I made sure they knew that I was taking a trip with just me and my daughter and the car would need to be safe.  Seeing as I had spent $1600 on the car in the previous 6 weeks, they assured me there was nothing more that could go wrong.  Yeah right!  We had gone about 16 miles out of town when the white smoke started coming out of the hood and the car lost all power.  I steered it off to the side of the freeway in a very safe place and called the repair shop.  They believed a hose had come loose and I could safely drive it to Cedar City if I wanted.  Well, that car was going nowhere.  It wouldn't go forward or backward.  On a side note, Brooklyn was starving and hadn't eaten since breakfast.  She had wanted to go into Hurricane for some lunch, but I said that was the wrong direction.  I told her we would head north and stop in Cedar City.  Thank goodness we had some fresh tomatoes from a neighbor's garden in the car or she might have died of starvation!

I called my mom to see if she had any ideas.  And boy did she!  She drove her car  and my Aunt Jill drove Brooklyn's truck up to where we were stranded.  We waited for the tow truck to take my Subaru back to the repair shop and we continued on in Brooklyn's truck.  We were on our way again after only a two hour delay!  (As a side note, one of the hoses had been connected wrong and the vehicle was fixed at no charge to me).

On Saturday, Brooklyn hiked to the Y with some of her friends and I went shopping.  We managed to make it back and get dressed just in time for Jane Stringham's baptism.  Brooklyn has always thought of Jane as her little sister so we were excited to be there for her special day.

On Saturday, Ginger, Bailey and Charlie came up to Sandy.  We were able to go to dinner at Zupas with Brandon and Amber before the concert.  We had quite a time trying to take a picture where my arms didn't look fat ! I forgot I could just crop them out!
Brandon and Amber took Charlie for the night...and they dropped Brooklyn and Bailey off at the mall.  There is a funny story about that...Little Kitty notepads and candy will trigger my mind, but I best not put it in here!

And then Ginger and I were off to join the old fogies at the wonderful concert.  Neil Diamond is a great performer.  Since he writes most of his songs, he has so much emotion that he sings with.  There was a girl on the floor dancing her heart out and she also provided entertainment for us.  There was no opening act...just pure Neil and he was amazing as always.  That night Neil said he would be giving 100% of the proceeds from t-shirt sales to the Aurora, Colorado shooting victims.  The t-shirt stands were so crowded that they ran out of all of them.  We were in the throng for awhile but to no avail.   I would post pictures from the concert, but Ginger looks drunk and I just look fat!  Not that I am thin, but I can promise you only water was consumed that night!

The next day we joined Brandon and Amber at their church ward and had dinner with the Farrs and dessert with Amber's grandparents.  The Farrs were so nice to let us invade their home several times this summer.  I told them if they weren't such good hostesses we wouldn't keep coming back!  Monday I went into work at Georgia Carpet Utah.  It was nice to actually be working the phones and on the floor.  The week was spent in various ways:  shopping, lunching, visiting friends, etc.  All in preparation for Thursday, August 2nd, when Justin would be returning.

I received a suprise phone call from one of my BYU roommates,  Elizabeth Bretschneider...Zibbi to me.  She was visiting from Washington and was staying at her mom's house by the Jordan River Temple.  I was excited to go see her.  While visiting about random things, we started talking about our BYU Independent Study classes we were both doing.  She mentioned that if on a Pell Grant all course work had to be finished by August 31st or else you failed the class.  This was news to me and I still had a class to finish.  That was not as bad as my sister, Lori.  She was working on three classes as well as preparing for her daughter's wedding at the end of August.  I called BYU and this was verified to be true.  Lori and I both went into panic mode and then to overdrive to finish our courses with everything else that was going on.  Thank goodness for that "tender mercy" as Zibbi called it.  We both finished our courses in the nick of time.

On Thursday morning I woke up and felt like I could barely breathe.  My heart was racing.  Today was the day I would see my baby boy after two long years.  He was not due to fly in until 8:45 pm so I had a whole day ahead of me.

Wendy's sister and her husband are serving as mission presidents over the Salt Lake City South mission.  So once a month she fixes lunch for one of the leadership conferences.  Brooklyn and I were excited to help her.  I could think of no better way to spend the day waiting for my missionary than to serve other missionaries.  Brooklyn thought being around the cute elders might be too much of a temptation for her!

We also spent the morning painting Justin's room.  He will be staying in Kenny and Wendy Farr's basement.  I was able to borrow Eric Lee's old bed and get him some new bedding as well as all the "supplies" someone who has been away for two years might need!

Brooklyn spent the night before making Elder Moore an awesome welcome home sign.  We forked the front yard with yellow balloons.  Some visitors came by...everyone was anticipating Justin's arrival that evening.

It seems like we were doing all we could to pass the time away.  I still had to honor Justin's request.  He asked for three things when he arrived at the airport: A pretzel from Pretzeltime, a Dr. Pepper, and a masseuse.  I told him I would be happy to provide the first two, but there was no way I was having a masseuse at the airport!

Amber agreed to be in charge of doing the welcome home sign for the airport.  I loved how Brandon got the balloons too.  I really was happy to have so much help in preparing for Justin's return.

The countdown began.  From years, to weeks, to days, to hours and now to just minutes.  I was nearly coming out of my skin.  I was getting nervous and anxious.  I wondered if Justin was feeling the same way.  Soon enough the long awaited time would be here and I could be the mama of two returned missionaries.  Because the boys overlapped in their missions, it had been almost four years since I had all my kiddos together.  I was looking forward to having all my children in my arms at once.  I was ready for that!

New Windows

We were so excited to get new windows put on our house.  Brooklyn helped me get the blinds and curtains down.  She enjoyed posing in front of the old windows.  They were aluminum and were so water-stained we could hardly see out of them...and they always looked dirty.

Besides feeling like we were living in fish bowl for a couple of days while they were being replaced...we are so much happier with the new windows!  Unfortunately this is only the before...no after pictures just yet!

My Birthday

On July 19th, I turned 47 years old.  There are some numbers I like and some I don't.  Personally, I don't care for odd numbers...so saying I am 47 doesn't sound real pretty to me.  It has nothing to do with the age...but everything to do with the fact that 7 just isn't one of my favorite numbers - even when it is paired with 4 which is my favorite number.  Okay, rambling on like this about something so inconsequential makes me seem old and senile....so I will shut up!

The day wasn't planned to be too eventful.  Brandon was in Salt Lake, Justin still on his mission, and Brooklyn at EFY.  So I woke up, checked the many, many facebook birthday wishes (I love that!) and then headed out the door to work.  The 80 year old man I was working for sang me Happy Birthday - that was cute of him.  When I left there my mom and I went to a movie and then had an early dinner at Outback Steakhouse.  It was yummy.

After the movie I noticed I had several text messages and voicemails and I must say I enjoyed getting all of your birthday wishes.  Ginger and Bailey's birthday song medley was especially memorable...it went on and on and on.  I will be saving that one for years to come!

I headed home and was glad my friend Bonita came by for a visit and a little chat.  I love spending time with her so that was a treat.

Brandon promised he would  make me a Mexican dinner when I go to Salt Lake next...and I just happened to catch Brooklyn online checking her email around 11 pm...so I got to chat with her for a minute.

But the highlight of the day came from my boy who is thousands of miles away in Nicaragua.  Elder Moore really spoiled his mama on her birthday.  I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from him.  The bouquet consisted of red tulips and purple irises and was so vibrant and pretty.  He sent along a poem that truly made my day.  It went like this:

Ho ho hoem, imma write you a poem
Mommy I love you, Mommy I do
Shortly I will be with you.
You mean the world to me, I hope I am what you want me to be.
Thanks for raising me the way you did, even though I was a crazy little kid.
That's why you threw me in the gym, but now im found singing a hymn.
Be patient my mommy, I am almost there
I have much I want to share.
Love, Juice

I loved that poem!

Then surprise, surprise when the next day I received a dozen chocolate covered strawberries from him.   With that gift came another card:

Thank you for everything.  I love you more than you ever know.
All the way to the farthest McDonalds and back.
Love, Your Studly Elder

I loved the box the berries came in as well.  It said some really funny things.

The "love you all the way to McDonalds" saying has been a part of our family for years.  When I was young my dad was a McDonald's manager.  When he would leave for work we would all say that to him.  It is a family tradition now.

The point is though, who needs a man when they have a son like that ;)  Flowers, chocolate and beautiful words.  Thanks Justin.

So all in all, I may have been alone in my home on my birthday, but I felt so much love.  All is well, all is well.

July Visitors

I am so thankful that I have so many wonderful friends from my neighborhood up in Sandy.  There are many special people who take the time to come visit when they are in Southern Utah.

The month of July brought some fun visits.  The Stringhams are always welcome guests.  I am thankful Laura takes the time to pack up her little tribe and journey down to La Verkin.  We spent the day talking and eating and laughing and catching up.  I love talking to her and Brooklyn loves being with her little sisters and brother.  Laura's family gives her the younger siblings she has always missed.  Whenever either of us get to the other one's territory, we always try to find a way to spend time together and that makes me happy!

Also this month, we had a surprise as Spence & Sandy Lloyd and Craig & Roberta Fox came to see us.  They took Brooklyn and me to dinner and we spent a couple of hours reminiscing.  I always felt like their youngest boys were my boys, so it is fun to get together with those that are in your village :)  We all impacted each other's families for good for so many years that it just feels so comfortable.  There is love and respect and genuine care.  Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming up to my little neck of the desert.  It felt so good being with all of you.

Jimmy's Going Away Party

Brooklyn had an interpreter that she really loved.  His name is Jimmy Harris.  She was sad when she lost him as her interpreter in the middle of her junior year of high school.  Jimmy decided to enter law school in San Diego and the Center for the Deaf had a going away party for him in St. George.  We were happy to be invited.  Besides Jimmy, Brooklyn had many other "angels" that she was happy to see.

Jimmy Harris, Meredith Winn, Meadow Lisonbee and Marianne

Meredith asked Brooklyn to say (make that sign) a few words at the party.  Brooklyn had to stand on the picnic table so everyone could see her.  She let Jimmy know that he had been like a father to her.  She let him know how much she loved him and how thankful she was that he knew when something was bothering her and he could make her feel better.  They both wept.  It was an emotional time.  We will miss you Jimmy but we are so glad you were a part of Brooklyn's life!

The Kids from 2nd Ward

I love living in Southern Utah...but I also miss my friends from Sandy.  I had many "sisters" there and we helped to raise each other's children.  I also served many years in the Young Womens and those girls were like my daughters.  That is why I get so excited when these kids come to stay for a few days.  It helps that I live at Zion National Park's front door and that I am St. George's  neighbor !

Ian Lee, Adam Lee and Court McMullin came to stay this past week.  They were so nice and did some honey-do things for me.  I love having men around!  Big strong capable young men that just make me feel taken care of.  Thanks boys for helping  make my outside look better :)

Also, Thursday was Court's 24th birthday.  I went the day before to order him a birthday cake from the local grocery store.  I told the man taking my order,  "This is for a 24 year old guy, so I want it to be masculine.  No roses or flowers."  He asked me if balloons and streamers would be okay.  Of course!  Imagine my surprise when I arrived the next day to pick up the cake.  It was done in pastel pinks and blues.  The plastic balloons were baby colors as well.  Obviously the order-taker and the baker did not communicate.  So I left with a cake meant for a baby shower...not a grown man's birthday party!  I let Court know the baker must not have known whether he was Court or Courtney...and whether he was 1 or 25.  Court was a good sport about it and said, "I am a metrosexual baby."

On Friday night, I was excited to have Katelin and Cassidy Cook join the group. They were on their way to a family reunion in St. George.  We stayed up late catching up and remembering.  It was so fun!

Saturday morning came too quickly and after breakfast they were all off.  Thanks for coming and bringing a smile to my face.  You are all welcome anytime!
